I used to have a magnificent home bar where friends, colleagues, guests, and lovers of a stiff drink and music and great conversation used to attend.  It’s been a few years since last my home bar was open for business.  But one activity everyone used to engage in at my cocktail hours was what I called “Bar Quotes.”  I would provide a few and other people would provide each their own profound quotation from some famous person in history who said something worth repeating and remembering.  In the spirit of this fun activity I used to hold at my home bar I intend now to provide every Monday here on my blog a fun queue of famous quotations for everyone who visits here to read and enjoy.  They are and will be my bar quotes for this and every Monday.  If you have one you’d like to share, don’t hesitate to send it in and I’ll try to post it here.  So let’s read some great words from great minds and lofty spirits of our world!

The secret of success
is to be in harmony with existence,
to be always calm…
to let each wave of life
wash us a little farther up the shore.
–Cyril Connolly

Shun idleness. It is a rust that attaches itself to the most brilliant of metals.

To write what is worth publishing, to find honest people to publish it, and get sensible people to read it, are the three great difficulties in being an author.
–Charles Caleb Colton

Writing is no trouble: you just jot down ideas as they occur to you. The jotting is simplicity itself – it is the occurring which is difficult.
–Stephen Leacock

The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny — it is the light that guides your way.

Perseverance is a great element of success. If you only knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody.
–Henry W. Longfellow

The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is at all comprehensible.
–Albert Einstein

Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of a joy you must have somebody to divide it with.
–Mark Twain

God enters by a private door into every individual.
–Ralph Waldo Emerson

He that lives upon hope will die fasting.
–Benjamin Franklin

There are a terrible lot of lies going around the world, and the worst of it is half of them are true.
–Sir Winston Churchill

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects!
–Robert A. Heinlein, “Lazarus Long”
