When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion -- when you see that in order
to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing -- when you see money flowing
to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors -- when you see that men get richer by graft and pull
than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you -- when you
see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice -- you may know that your society
is doomed.
--author and philosopher Ayn Rand (1905-1982)

Dejo en sus manos uno de los mejores discos que podrán escuchar. Uno ...

One of the greatest rock bluesy songs ever written is this one by Ten Years After.  It’s a powerful social commentary song up there with classics like Stairway to Heaven and Hey, Jude and World in Motion.  Hopefully by next week I shall mellow out once more and have a really pleasant ballad torch song to share.  But for now, it’s okay to get all intense and rock out!  And read and sing along with the lyrics. Ricky Nelson

Dear Song Lovers:

What we have here are two very similar different songs where the idiom/saying “fools rush in” plays a major component of each.  I came upon this phenomenon about 15 years ago and always wanted to tell the world about it.  So now I’m telling you.  Why I came upon this phenomenon is simple: cause it’s my job to come upon these things!

Anyway, the general theme of each song is pretty much the same, yet each is very much lyrically and musically original and different.  Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: Both songs are exceptionally beautiful and were huge hits for the artists in question.  Those artists would be Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley.  Who else but two of the greatest singers ever!

P.S.  Don’t hesitate to drop me a note and let me know which foolish song you like best.  Me, I like them equally!

THIS WEEK’S BAR QUOTES – (from 07-09-10)

There is not a more repulsive spectacle than on old man who will not forsake the world, which has already forsaken him.

Far more numerous are those as such, who think too little and talk too much!
–John Dryden

It’s just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up.

The way of the superior person is threefold: virtuous, they are free from anxieties; wise, they are free from perplexities; and bold, they are free from fear.

Comfort zones are plush lined coffins. When you stay in your plush lined coffin, you die.
–Stan Dale

To be innocent is to be not guilty; but to be virtuous is to overcome our evil inclinations.
–William Penn

It is a miserable state of mind to have few things to desire and many things to fear.
–Francis Bacon

He that never changes his opinion never corrects mistakes and will never be wiser on the morrow than he is today.

In America there are two classes of travel – first class, and with children.
–Robert Benchley

Military glory–the attractive rainbow that rises in showers of blood.

Men harm others by their deeds, themselves by their thoughts.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

As a professional writer, there are numerous writing and editing services I provide professional businesses and individuals. One of these is writing personalized poems. Almost regardless of the subject or specifics, I can probably write you an elegant and poignant poem to memorialize that special person or event you have in mind. And I will write it in true verse, with rhyme and meter and structure and depth! Drop me a note and I’ll tell you how.

Meanwhile, here’s a poem I wrote not too long ago dedicated to the notion that in matters of the heart–no matter how difficult or hopeless–we must give of love and emotion in order to receive love and sweet emotion!

For years I’ve stood out here in the lonely looking rain,
Counting the darkest clouds in the lonely looking sky.
Searching for someone to count my tears and feel my pain,
And sooth me with a soft kiss and a brokenhearted sigh.

For I’ve looked for you in sunshine and on sunny days
Where love had seemed warm and rife and always strolling by.
But dark and cloudy years only learned to count the ways
How brief is sunshine…and how quickly sunny skies can fly!

And so, I’d walk rainy streets looking for hope and love,
Thinking if I called your name, I might hear you reply;
And we might see more than lonely looking skies above
(And find something more from this life than dreams that only die!)

For one day you’d look and know your hopes were not in vain.
You’d see I’ve lived a lifetime for you to walk on by!
Then learning I’ve counted all your tears and felt your pain,
You’d know I’ve been waiting here in the lonely looking rain
To sooth you with a soft kiss and a brokenhearted sigh.

On my Top 20 greatest pop/rock bands of all time is Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.  Each of them alone is a legend in his own right.  But every now and then over the years when they joined forces and put out new music it was truly a seminal event.  A fabulous musical event, too!

Here are four songs from the musical icons, from a pretty great album they wrote and produced in 1988.  These are my favorites from the album, but there are a lot of other gems therein.  For sure!

I’ve always loved dramatic photos of trains, and especially of high speed rail trains.  But the pics of yesteryear showing all the amazing kinds of trains that transported people and goods across our country through our history–these I’ve always loved the best.

Which is another reason you’ll love our book Fast Trains.  It’s filled with awesome pics and illustrations as well as bountiful stories of train and HSR travel. Entertain your children and friends for years to come and order your copy of Fast Trains: American’s High Speed Future!  Here:

It wasn’t the reward that mattered or the recognition you might harvest. It was your depth of commitment, your quality of service, the product of your devotion — these were the things that counted in a life. When you gave purely, the honor came in the giving, and that was honor enough.
