Big Bend National Park in far west Texas rocks! And the National Park Service is correct when it says Big Bend is a magical place.
NPS also says that Big Bend is a hiker’s paradise containing the largest expanse of roadless public lands in Texas. For more than 150 miles of trails offer opportunities for day hikes or backpacking trips. Elevations range from 1,800 feet along the Rio Grande to 7,832 feet on Emory Peak in the Chisos Mountains.
The park is also a geologic treasure and world-class arena for geology: from limestone to laccoliths and faults to volcanoes, its fossils include a world-record pterosaur and giant 50-foot crocodile!
Big Bend is also an Audubon’s delight: with a multiplicity of habitats that include desert oases, hidden canyons and an undulating river corridor–all of which shelter more than 450 bird species.
