Every Time We Say Goodbye

GHOSTLY LOVERS

With all the recent disasters and tragedies throughout the country, it’s important to remember how fragile and short is life, how we should take time and care for every loved one and friend. For one day they’re here, and the next they can be gone, as this poem reminds.

EVERY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE

Oh I loved you every morning and until the next day,
And never thought I’d ever wake up alone with the dawn.
For love is a blessing that seemed blessed to forever stay,
Until one morning I woke to find you forever gone.

For when our hearts do awake into their spiritual birth
We pray to keep love and never be left brokenhearted.
And though our time is so brief and unsure upon this earth,
We pray our hearts will never become dearly departed!

Still, if only we could know how life and morning might go
And the desolation the next day can bring forever,
We might find every parting a form of deathless sorrow
To make us treasure every moment we are together.

Ah…if only we knew how short and fragile hope can be
And how suddenly morning can end and a life can die!
We would cherish the present and beg the future to see
Why we should be so careful every time we say goodbye.

WHERE IS THE POET IN YOU?

BESIDE THE SHORE

DAWN AND MORN

Her lips were soft and her heart frail;
love was delicate and fawning!
For a while it lived and couldn’t fail…
like the sand the sea
buries beauty at day’s early dawning.

Then seize a final breathless kiss;
death’s knowledge comes without warning!
As she who I forever, inconsolably miss…
like the sand the sea
on a cold and lonely ebb tide morning.

WORTH LOSING

Some would believe love will never come to them:
There are not angels but only stars above;
And such joy only lives in books and poems;
Yet how would you know if you’ve never known love?

For I wonder if you thought of me today,
And in just one thought you held me near and dear?
Then later when you found a smile in your heart,
Was it not some thought of me that put it there?

Oh, you can live free of feelings, and aloof,
What joy does love give that pain does not abuse?
Why suffer happiness that can come and go,
When in loneliness there is nothing to lose?

I come to you softly but experienced,
As someone who knows love and made it succeed.
Even if longing is a selfish weakness,
Love is not wrong cause it is something you need.

Besides, love is not bondage or sacrifice.
But a journey two choose to walk together.
It may not offer peace and serenity,
But its chance at happiness lives forever!

Yes, you can live for freedom and loneliness,
And take pleasure in worshiping self-denial,
But each morning when you awake with the dawn
Your heart will know what it is that made you smile.

So try as you will, you cannot stop thinking of me.
For love is a choice which no one is free to choose.
Besides, what possible harm can there be in love
When loneliness is the only thing you have to lose?

BROKEN HEARTS AND LOST SOULS

There is no bitterness too great to heal,
What one word of kindness often consoles.
Still, I know the bitterness that you feel,
In this world of broken hearts and lost souls.

Oh, I am one of them as much as you,
Whose life seems cast from a dark-clouded birth.
For we cannot prove what we know is true,
That we were born to walk this pain-filled earth!

I only see what I have always seen,
And only know what I have always known:
There must be something more our lives to mean
Than to wander it…forever alone.

I look upon your face and see a smile,
And know that not all is lost entirely.
For have we not been waiting here a while,
As the broken shore awaits the slow sea?

Yet even the sea throws its driftwood back,
Like desolate skies do a falling star.
So perhaps no life is so bleak and black
That hope cannot save us from what we are!

Might it be better if we joined forces?
I hear hope is good–and love is great, too!
Perhaps if we combined our resources,
Happiness might be something we can do.

So…even if we can’t have forever,
And hope is the only word that consoles,
Aren’t two broken hearts better together
Than wandering through life as two lost souls?

SONNETS TO ENJOY THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS!

As a professional writer, there are numerous writing and editing services I provide professional businesses and regular folks. One of these is writing personalized poems. And regardless of the subject or specifics, I can probably write you an elegant and poignant poem to memorialize that special person or event you have in mind. And my fees are quite reasonable! I also write different categories of verse including romance, nature, philosophy. humor, family, politics and even for brand products.

Here is a form of verse called the sonnet–two of them actually–which, if you really appreciate romantic poetry, just might do the job!

LOVE AMONG THE MOURNERS, A SONNET

I felt among strangers that final day,
Like mourners at a graveyard donned in black;
Mourning the sight of you walking away,
Though you stopped for a moment to look back.
I knew you could not see that I saw you,
And the look of sorrow upon your face.
That sadly a last look did not draw you
To return to a sweet and warmer place!
It was never somewhere you hoped to be,
Even the times when feeling loved felt great.
So why bother now looking back to see
What you knew long ago would be too late?
So go away, as have I, and walk on;
There’s no use looking back for what is gone.

GOODBYES AND FAREWELLS, A SONNET

No amount of love knows what lies ahead,
Nor what sorrowful words remain unsaid.
For not everyone fears desolation
At the time when goodbye is first spoken.
Still, sometimes love offers consolation
When there is more than one heart that’s broken.
Often it’s not seen in a lover’s eyes
When goodbye is meant as the final good.
But can’t forgive and forget when loves dies
To explain what cannot be understood.
So in silence I would speak another,
(The word farewell you whispered at the end!)
A word only spoken by a lover…
But never someone who had been a friend.

Meanwhile, here’s a poem I wrote not so long ago on the subject of loneliness.  ‘Tis an affliction, I dare say, that even the strongest among us has experienced in life.  But that’s all right, you don’t have to admit it.  Not even to the wind!  For it already knows.

LONELINESS
Out looking for a sunset or one sparkling sunrise,
Loneliness makes you tired of enjoying them alone.
So what of happy words, seeing sunlight in hope’s eyes,
If all your life loneliness is all you’ve ever known?
For what matter the glimpses you see that never form,
If they be no more than just a momentary gaze?
Oh, I would look for love in rain or even a storm,
If love were only cruel on desolate sunny days.
Might suddenly you appear along some sunlit beach,
And feeling as sullen as I of the lonely past,
Might we then share a sunset or sunrise within reach,
To know just one moment when loneliness didn’t last?
Oh, might I then see myself reflected in your eyes,
As I would see your happiness reflected in mine.
Oh, I would give you a sunset…and such a sunrise,
Where love was endless…and loneliness would never shine!
That if I should find you by some lonely, distant sea,
And if your heart be as sad and forlorn as my own–
(Though love became cruel and all that life had ever shown!)
You would know me…and then answer my desperate plea,
Cause loneliness is way too lonely to bear alone.

EXHORTATION

I missed the holidays that were and the company of loved ones and special friends now gone.  I find this to be true for those still around among family and friends who celebrated as I several decades of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.  The festive atmosphere, shimmering lights and decorations and hoopla for the holidays still hold some appeal.  But not like before.  And, as the years go on, the appeal wanes a little bit more each holiday season.  Tried as I have, it seems impossible to prevent this gradual feeling of ennui from setting in.  It appears to be as unavoidable as is the passage of time and growing age.

I think the older we get the less appealing and less fun become the holidays is something that really begins to happen when we hit our fifties. For some, maybe during their forties.  This is because as the years go on we lose more and more loved ones and friends.  And so it is at this point in my life I don’t really celebrate the holidays.  I acknowledge them and still realize their importance and reverence.  But they’re more a fun and joy to younger people, in my opinion.  To us older folk, they become more and more bittersweet and continually rife with past memory.

The only decent advice I have to give is cherish the holidays that were and the better memory you can keep until the end.  Most of all, cherish those loved ones and friends now gone, and the ones still with you until the end!  Hopefully in a better way, my poem here will tell you what I mean.

EXHORTATION

I will always feel love that is true and magnificent
And hear lovers repeat words that are well worth repeating,
(So it is with true friends who share every careful greeting);
And yet, though love is potent and happiness is well meant,
I would tell them to hold on to every precious moment,
For love is frail…and happiness is so very fleeting.

For I have felt the spark of hope and the sunlight beaming
Through the eons of life that selfishness and greed distort
(Which truth and wisdom often fail to repair or comfort);
And though there are those who dream of sunlight always gleaming,
I would tell them to hold on to every dream they’re dreaming,
For dreams are such fragile things…and life is so very short.
