If an open heart is the path to love, and love is the path to happiness, all you have to do is open up.

I can hear your heart speak
In half heartbroken tones.
Regretful of the past,
Fearful of the future.
In tragic, changeless ways:
There’s much you should have done.
There’s much you wish you had.
Oh, the life we lost together!

For I would speak them too
In full heartbroken tones.
Regretful of this life,
Hopeless of the future.
For all the changeless days:
Oh, I should have loved you.
I should have loved you more.
I should have loved you forever!

The Past

Sometimes the thing that keeps coming back never left in the first place, though you had to forever let it go.

You never have to forget the past.
You never have to regret the loss.
Pain and grief do not forever last,
Any more than a stone gathers moss.
Doesn’t matter where the road has led.
Doesn’t matter what was never said.
(Nor why your heart lies empty and dead!)
You don’t stop loving someone when they fail to try.
You don’t stop loving someone when they say goodbye.

Eschew all those who skulk around you

Ordering you how and what to feel,
Trying to harden and unbound you,
Claiming the past is lost and not real.
No, embrace the sorrow and regret.
Never let the world make you forget.
(Nor the soul of love you sought and met!)
You don’t stop loving someone when they say goodbye.
You don’t stop loving someone just because they die.

Sometimes love can conquer anything. And sometimes it can heal anything and everything!

It seems like a lifetime that your heart has been broken,
And as lonely as a poet’s cloud beneath the stars.
If only three little words had been ever spoken,
I would speak them now to heal all your wounds and scars.

All the wounds I would soothe with a soft and gentle kiss,
And all the scars erase with a soft and gentle touch.
A lover’s words and kisses can comfort even this,
When your lover’s heart is true and loves someone so much.

So let my lips give to you what your life never knew,
Which two broken hearts have hoped for and cannot withstand.
Let three little words soothe passion’s soul–I love you!
And love shall always heal us as the sea does the sand.

1Eulogy to Love pic

Ambivalence is a powerful force. Especially when it comes to love and loss. And the memory of grief and joy.

I fold my arms around you,
You slip into my embrace.
While the anguish of my tears
Seems mirrored upon your face.

So I imagine them there,
Like sunlight on rainy days;
My lips kissing memories,
Like sweet lies the truth betrays.

Still I savor one last kiss,
Then lift you into your grave.
One last kiss to court the past,
And the life love failed to save.

Gone is the warmth of your lips,
Gone the treasure of your breath.
And though everything is gone,
You are beautiful in death!

For a faint smile lines your face.
Sunlight lingers in your hair.
And though life seems present still,
It’s as lifeless as despair!

Were it I could steal away
And give even one more kiss.
Instead of embracing death,
And giving more tears to this!

Yet such are life’s memories
Death scars with tears and regret:
Too painful to remember.
Too beautiful to forget.

Only for a short while does life and love seem long; then for the longest of harsh moments it can become so brief and short!

Somewhere spiritually we should recall the day
Love comes upon us like sunlight upon the sea!
The springtime of forever seems destined to stay,
When all is happy and glad, and glad and happy.

But remember time is a thief that steals away
The springtime of forever promised by the sea.
Its slow suddenness drowns life as night does the day!
Then all turns lonely and sad, and sad and lonely.

Every deep meaning in life deserves a metaphor for what it really means and the memory you have of it.

While the open sea closes around me
And winds chill the warm evening night,
I dwell on sweet, solemn thoughts of thee…
Now constant reminders of my loveless plight.

The evening darkens and the ocean sings
As the roaring waves crash upon some reef.
There…my desperate soul still clings
Waiting for evening tide to drown my grief!

Time has a way of making old the new
And this ocean shore I walk in torment,
Is but another remembered vision of you
When love was true and permanent.

And even though I never understood
Why death came to take you from me,
The tide brings you back each night as driftwood
With memories of us together by the sea
To quiet and soften the sorrow in me.
