TRANSPORTATION & HSR TRAINS! While the implementation of high speed rail in America continues to languish and go nowhere under a widespread avalanche of repetitive studies, rhetorical debate, vetoed initiatives, political wrangling and money haggling, the rest of the world continues to lay new track and bring incredibly fast, sophisticated and enjoyable high speed rail to people everywhere.

Case in point: Spain, which plans to have a new HSR line up and running and connecting Madrid to neighboring Portugal in just two years. I may visit Spain in 2019 just to ride it. And to experience what I haven’t experienced in America in a long time: technological advancement and progress!

I used to think life was all about the destination, achieving some great ambition or dream, reaching your goal and getting everything done.  Naturally I had to grow older and wiser to finally see the forest from the trees.  And it’s become perfectly clear to me.  Not only the forest from the trees (and the trees from the forest!) but the fact that life isn’t about the destination or goal or any such nonsense.  It is indeed about the journey.  And what we experince over and during the journey.  And most of all, what we learn, how we change, and how we grow and progress.  As well, I think it’s about the obstacles we overcome and the challenges we face and conquer and what good seeds we plant along the way.  Did we do good?  Did we make a difference?  Was our presence here important?

Well, this poem of mine touches on all these subjects, but it’s focus is on taking the journey that is life…and not having to take it alone!

Patrick The Poet

You often swear
the past is not your allegiance
and the life you lead and live.
True, it does appear
the future is the journey
you fear and have never known.
But perhaps
if you learned to eschew the past
and surrender your reliance
upon hating the future
(that fear and ignorance give!)
then perhaps
the journey that is life
you would not
have to travel
Now out here
in this vast world
filled with turmoil and strife
and loneliness and despair
(and fear of the unknown!)
I have seen how the past
can leave the lonely world
easier to bear,
and the journey that is life
less desperate and unknown.
For it is clear
the journey is also vast and rife
with infinite hope and change;
for there is love and friendship
to aid the journey that is life,
and other magnificent things
yet to be shown!
So keep the future near
and let the past achieve an end;
what need is there of strife
when the future is waiting
to be known?
For the journey that is life
is for us to share!
So come now, take my hand
and be my friend.
And I swear
to all that is holy in life,
you will no longer
have to travel
the journey

What Matter?

Since today is POET’S DAY it is important to end the work week on a positive note.  In this regard, I consider the learning process that is life itself.  We are always learning and hopefully always growing and improving and progressing.  There is so much to learn and yet to know…and yet to do.  Unless you’re six feet under, I see no reason ever stop.

So it is about truth and love and so many other superlative aspects of the human condition.  Even if for most our lives we lived in ignorance and walked a life full of folly, it is never too late to learn and to change and to become a better person.  This is the general theme of my poem for this bright, bustling, bodacious POET’S DAY.  And I hope the poem and its message is something you enjoy.  (:-D

What matter if the earth be flat or round
Or if life should remain a mystery?
So long as they astonish and astound,
This lively world is good enough for me!
But if by chance yours may have turned out wrong
And left you feeling little strength to survive,
I ask what matter if you be weak or strong
So long as you’re breathing and are still alive?
Yes, the days look dark and your hopes are few
And a lifetime of failures is all you can see,
But what matter if the world should laugh at you
So long as you still have your dignity?
For soon enough the falsehood of success flies
As wisdom has betrayed you as much as youth.
Still, what matter if you’ve lived your life in lies
So long as you ultimately find the truth?
But enough of regret.  And vanquish guilt!
The powers of change are poised and amassed!
And still waiting to see the future rebuilt…
Whenever you’re ready to bury the past.
Therefore, though you be angry at time and fate
And might even curse the heavens above,
What matter if a lifetime you endure hate
So long as you finally embrace love?
