ALL THAT IS REAL IS YOU…

Dear Song List:

Rumors that I love The Moody Blues almost as much as The Fab Four are not exaggerated.  Beginning around the same time as The Beatles, The Moody Blues have stayed in the limelight and continuously performed and recorded new albums some 40+ years since their inception.  And every album has produced amazing hits and unforgettable ballads and beautiful melodies.  This song, from their 16th album, Strange Times, is no exception.  When I listen to it, it is my favorite.  But then, I have this experience with 30 to 50 other songs of theirs!

You may not like it as well.  But I hope you enjoy it well enough and the sheer sonic beauty, originality and its timeless message of faithful love and conviction.  Written and sung by the band’s lead singer and nonpareil songwriter and guitar player, Justin Hayward, here’s a gem to share with the love that is most real to you.

THE PRESENT

“The Present” I believe to be one of the greatest albums out of the many incredible ones written by The Moody Blues over the years.  If you’re a Moody Blues fan or not, I highly recommend making this album a part of your musical library.  It is filled with such sonic beauty and melodic splendor.  You will really come to thank me for it, and who knows?  Maybe even come to appreciate my strange, melodramatic ways and wry sense of humor!

Meanwhile, here is a sample from The Present, written and sung by TMB’s legendary lead singer Justin Hayward–an incredible singer/songwriter in his own right.  It’s called “Running Water” and is a favorite of mine from the band’s entire vast catalog of inimitable music.  Was a favorite of my great novelist father, too, and how I miss the times I used to play this song and the whole album for him.  In times long ago that once was The Present.  And in another meaning…still is!

Broken Dream

If there be a category for ultimate torch songs then this beautifully melancholic ballad by the lead singer of The Moody Blues would definitely be listed there.  From his mega-hit solo album, “The View From The Hill,” the lilting song we have here is called Broken Dream.  And what I found online is a live performance of the song by it’s author–the one and only Justin Hayward, master guitarist and songwriter extraordinaire!

What is really amazing is he sings the song live exactly as the song was recorded and sounds on the album.  A treat extraordinaire for anyone who appreciates torch songs and can relate to the sense of loss this song evokes…but also gives solace to.  Enjoy.

WE CAN MOVE MOUNTAINS!

This is but one of many beautiful songs written by the leader of The Moody Blues.  So few know that he is one of the greatest songwriters of the last century.  When you check out some of the many awesome songs he’s written over the past 40 years as a solo artist and for the TMB, you will also know!  Beginning with this one, of course.

This is a song about harmony and inspiration and having courage.  I hope you enjoy this lilting gem by Justin Hayward.  And remember: we can indeed move mountains.
